LLMSW Supervision: Individual or Group
-
What is Clinical Supervision?
In order to become fully licensed in Michigan, a Limited Licensed Social Worker (LLMSW) must complete 4,000 hours of supervised practice in the practice modality in which they want to be licensed — clinical or macro. Supervision must be provided by a fully licensed MSW (LMSW). If a clinical license is pursued, a supervisor must possess a clinical license. If a macro license is pursued, a supervisor must possess a macro license.
-
Why is supervision important?
In short, we all are striving to be ethical, equipped, supported, engaged, and effective social workers. We all need support and guidance in this process, especially in our early stages of practice. The ASWB indicates that social work supervision is an essential and integral part of the training and continuing education required for the skillful development of professional social workers. Supervision protects clients, supports practitioners, and ensures that professional standards and quality services are delivered by competent social workers. The supervisor is responsible for providing direction to the supervisee, who applies social work theory, standardized knowledge, skills, competency, and applicable ethical content in the practice setting. The supervisor and the supervisee both share responsibility for carrying out their role in this collaborative process. Client confidentiality is strongly upheld.
-
What is the requirement for hours?
A LLMSW can work no less than 16 hours but no more than 40 hours per week. A Limited License Social Worker can earn credit for up to 2,000 hours of social work experience per year. A Limited License Social Worker cannot be granted more than 2,000 hours per year.
-
How often does supervision occur?
Supervisory review must be conducted for at least 4 hours per month with at least 1 hour of review being on an individual basis. Supervision may also be conducted in a group setting as long as 50% of the group supervision includes individual contact in which active functions and records of the limited licensee are reviewed.

Supervision Considerations
-During supervision, the supervisor may ask to review written case notes, diagnostic documents, and treatment plans. The supervisee may also request documents be reviewed at any time to receive insight and feedback.
--Issues related to the supervisee’s professional development will be discussed to promote personal growth, identity, confidence, and competence.
-If the Supervisee is unsatisfied with the supervision relationship, the Supervisor encourages the Supervisee to discuss the matter openly and allow the Supervisor the opportunity to remedy issues.
-Often, group supervision is a wonderful tool to enhance the knowledge of all persons within the group. The Supervisor strongly encourages cohesion among members of a supervision group.
-The supervision contract can be terminated, revised, or reviewed at any time per the request of the supervisor or supervisee
